The Role of Project Team Attributes in ERP Implementation: A Positivist Field Investigation

The adoption of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is a major challenge to organizations. Many implementation teams struggle to ensure the success of such projects. This research investigates how the nature of implementation teams may affect adoption success. The literature indicates that the Implementation Team Attributes (Breath of Experience, Self Management, and Cohesion) are necessary conditions for successful ERP system implementations. The study establishes three determinants of Project Success: Support of Organizational Activities, Stakeholder Satisfaction, and System Acceptance. The role of Team Attributes as necessary conditions for Project Success is investigated using five positivist case studies of ERP adoption projects. The results provide evidence contradicting the roles of most Team Attributes as necessary precursors to Project Success. Only Breath of Experience may be a necessary condition for Stakeholder Satisfaction and System Acceptance.  These findings refine prior assumptions by providing empirical evidence that only one particular Team Attribute is a necessary condition for two specific aspects of ERP success.
